More than a year after the Tohoku Earthquake and Disaster, recovery efforts have been progressing but the region needs all the support it can get. In order to help with that, we started a donation drive and called on people to donate money to those who were, and still are affected much more seriously than ourselves. Many JETs in Fukushima Prefecture, along with other citizens here, were eligible to receive money from TEPCO as compensation for voluntary evacuation, and so we especially encouraged these folks who would receive those funds to donate all or a portion of their compensation money to charity.

We chose 3 charities to donate funds to that we felt were very active in promoting the recovery and revitalization of Fukushima, and the Tohoku Region and its people:

Association for the Revitalization of Ishinomaki (ARI):
The Association for the Revitalization of Ishinomaki (ARI) is a group of friends that voluntarily came together around Toshihiko Fujita, who is a survivor of the tsunami. ARI’s main activities are cleaning gutters, debris removal, restoring damaged houses and businesses, garbage collection, moving assistance, helping restart businesses, park maintenance, running soup kitchens, and other activities. Currently, they are doing reconstruction work around the devastated areas in Ishinomaki but they mainly focus on rebuilding homes.

Soma Orphan Fund:
Soma City is accepting donations to a scholarship fund established for children left orphaned by the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Donations go towards scholarships, as well as academic and living expenses for these children through high school.

Fukushima Network for Saving Children from Radiation:
In the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, a group of fathers and mothers with concerns about the impact of radiation gathered and discussed what they could do to protect their children from radiation exposure. This led to the establishment of the Fukushima Network for Saving Children from Radiation (a.k.a. Kodomo Fukushima) on May 1, 2011.

We accepted money from May 15th to June 19th 2012, and people were able to choose which charities their money would go to. After all was said and done we received over 350,000 yen in donations! At the beginning of July 2012, we sent those donations to the aforementioned charities with the following amounts:

Association for the Revitalization of Ishinomaki: 102,500 yen

Soma Orphan Fund: 163,800 yen

Fukushima Network for Saving Children from Radiation: 108,000 yen

We would like to wholeheartedly thank everyone who donated; your charitable gesture will go a long way in helping Fukushima and the Tohoku Region in its rebuilding efforts.

Thank you so much!
